Tomato sauce is freezable, so you could technically make this ahead of time, but it’s ready so quickly that by the time you boil some pasta or let some pizza dough rest, you’ll have this sauce ready to roll.
How to Make Homemade Tomato Sauce
It’s as simple as this:
- Sauté plenty of chopped fresh garlic in a little olive oil until soft and fragrant.
- Add a can of whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes, bring it to a simmer and let it heat through, crushing the tomatoes with the back of a wooden spoon as they begin to break down.
- Add a bit of kosher salt (a teaspoon at a time, keep tasting)
- And then a little pepper and dried basil and voilá – it’s ready!
I use this Simple Homemade Tomato Sauce for pizza and pasta, for dipping and spreading. In the summer, when you want to make something lighter, try it over this Zucchini Lasagna!
This sauce can be made a few days ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until ready to use. The flavors only get better over time!
Why use San Marzano Tomatoes for pasta sauce?
San Marzano tomatoes are considered by cooks around the world as one of the best tomatoes. Grown in the rich Italian volcanic soil surrounding Mt. Vesuvio, near Naples, San Marzano tomatoes have the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.
Don’t be fooled by canned tomatoes that say “San Marzano style” tomatoes. You want the authentic real deal.
Sauce is always better when it’s homemade!
This simple tomato sauce gets it's deep flavor from plenty of garlic and using San Marzano tomatoes. It's my go to for pasta, pizza, and anytime I need a red sauce for dipping!
- 3 Tbs olive oil
- 4 medium garlic cloves finely chopped
- 28 oz can peeled San Marzano tomatoes
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 3/4 tsp Kosher salt
- Pepper to taste

Heat olive oil over medium-low heat.

Add chopped garlic and sauté until soft and fragrants. About 2 minutes. Do not let the garlic brown.

Add can of tomatoes and 1/2 tsp Kosher salt.

Simmer on medium/medium low until tomatoes are starting to break down and crush easily with the back of a wooden spoon. About 15 minutes.

Add dried basil.

Taste and season with remaining 1/4 tsp Kosher salt + a few grinds of pepper.
